F-Secure’s handling of detected phishing pages proved confusing. For non-secure HTTP fraudulent pages, it displayed a message warning “You shouldn’t surf here,” with a shark image at the bottom. But for other secure phishing pages, the browser warned, “This site can’t provide a secure connection,” with no notification from F-Secure. Tested simultaneously, the macOS edition correctly flagged these as dangerous, though, and I used the event timeline to verify F-Secure’s successful detection.
You get full control over your users and devices, just as on any platform. And you can route your web surfing through the Safe Browser if you want F-Secure to steer you away from malicious or fraudulent websites. Challenged to clean up a thumb drive brimming with Windows malware, it detected 75% of the samples, not up to the 89% score it managed in my previous review. Its protection against phishing sites (fraudulent sites that try to steal your login credentials) proved to be excellent. Like its Windows counterpart, it detected 98% of the real-world phishing pages in testing.
Avast, Kaspersky, and Webroot nose out F-Secure with 99%, while Bitdefender, Trend Micro, and ZoneAlarm have a perfect 100% detection score. To install F-Secure Safe on a Mac, you either send an email with the installation link or log into My F-Secure online and download the installer. The main visible difference is that the main window doesn’t display recent events. On a Mac, F-Secure Safe requires macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or higher. Like many security products, F-Secure fends off ransomware by preventing unauthorized changes to files in important folders such as Documents and Pictures.
Holders don’t need to do anything than just hold SAFESTAR tokens in their wallet to earn rewards. However, if protecting macOS devices is your main goal, you can do better. Symantec Norton 360 Deluxe (for Mac) is a full security suite, and it comes with a VPN that’s not limited in features or bandwidth. Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac also earned perfect scores from two labs and includes ransomware protection. These two are our Editors’ Choice products for antivirus protection under macOS.
With all F-Secure components enabled, the ransomware didn’t have a chance. The table above shows the number of days which Safestar closed above a certain price level. As for Safe Browsing, F-Secure doesn’t attempt to filter traffic for Chrome or other browsers.
You can still log in to My F-Secure to download protection for a new device, but in the current scheme of things, it’s less important than it once was.
